A Digital Marketing Agency in Seattle’s Smith Tower

As a child from a small, rural town, I was fascinated by skyscrapers. My family would often drive through Chicago and I would gawk at the monoliths and later, brag that I had seen the World’s Tallest Building. I maintain this fascination today as evidenced by my favorite Wikipedia page about the tallest buildings in the world.

Fresh out of college, I moved to Seattle without ever having visited before. Appropriately, I landed on a rainy evening. Heading north from the airport, I gawked at the skyline just like my eight-year-old self. I’ll never forget my first glimpse of the Space Needle that night, but there’s another building that stood out.

A friend and my de facto Seattle tour guide, pointed to this white building with a pyramid on top, “That used to be the tallest building west of the Mississippi River.” My inner eight-year-old stirred as I recognized significance.

Now, I’m proud to work in that building. Portent’s headquarters are located in the Smith Tower, Pioneer Square, Seattle, USA.

It’s an iconic building in a neighborhood with a storied history. Completed in 1914, the Smith Tower is over a hundred years old, and when it opened it was the fourth tallest building in the world.

Along with the Space Needle, the Smith Tower is symbolic of Seattle’s big ambitions as a city, a “portent” if you will.

What does this have to do with Portent?

Be Significant

Lyman Cornelius Smith originally planned to build a 14-story office building on this parcel of land, but his son, Burns Lyman Smith, had bigger plans. Inspired by skyscrapers in Manhattan, Smith knew that a much taller and more significant building was possible. An office building taller than the Great Pyramid of Giza and St. Peter’s Cathedral was awe-inspiring in 1914. Immediately, marketing efforts in Seattle and around the country depicted the Smith Tower with all the architectural wonders of the world in full-page newspaper ads.
Lesson Learned: Make something that matters. Stand out by providing real value.

Keep Learning

The architecture firm of Gaggin & Gaggin had never designed a building taller than a few stories. The proposed plans for the Smith Tower were daunting, but the Singer Building and the Metropolitan Life Tower in New York provided inspiration and proved that it was possible. The Gaggins used the best practices of their day to design the Smith Tower.

Lesson Learned: Keep learning from the best. Seek out and use best practices.

Choose the Right Spot

In 1910, Seattle was ripe for something big. The Klondike Gold Rush launched Seattle out of the boondocks. It was a boom town with something to prove. The Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition was held in 1909 to publicize the Pacific Northwest and claim the region’s spot on the world stage. Undoubtedly, this influenced Mr. Smith’s vision. He recognized the region’s ambition and built a tower to match.

Lesson Learned: Choose the right spot. Know your audience. Communicate with them effectively.

Build a Strong Foundation

South and west of this building, Pioneer Square is built on top of infill covering ancient tidal flats. There’s a significant earthquake risk to the neighborhood. Meanwhile, the Smith Tower is built on solid ground with deep foundations. Construction began by sinking 1,281 concrete pilings 22 feet deep into solid earth and clay. These pilings support a grillage made from almost 6,000 tons of iron and concrete. Massive metal plates on top of that grillage provide the ground level foundation for the 50 load bearing columns that form the base of the 462-foot building we know and love today.

Built to Last

In its hundred year history, the Smith Tower’s strong foundations helped it to survive three major earthquakes. After a severe 7.1 magnitude earthquake in 1949, inspecting the tower for damage cost more than the actual repairs. After a hundred years, multiple owners, earthquakes, and recessions, the Smith Tower still stands as beautiful, proud and significant as ever.

Lesson Learned: There are no shortcuts. Tactics change, but great marketing doesn’t. A 300 level student died in fight over a lover in Jigawa

A 300 level student of Federal University,
Dutse, Jigawa State, Bashir Musa was said to
have been killed in a fight over a girlfriend last
Friday.

Sale, a student of Jigawa state Polytechnic who
is befriending six others including the deceased,

Truly she was there, the guys attacked him,
leading to a serious scuffle which resulted to the death of Musa. In a statement issued over the
incident by the University, the Registrar of the University, Yusuf Adamu said the university will
make its position known to the public after the police investigation.

When Daily Trust contacted the state Police command Spokesperson, DSP Abdul Jinjiri, he
confirmed the incident saying investigation revealed that Musa died after a scuffle over a girl friend.

Nigeria has come a long way in terms of technology. Just like the popular saying goes, “we no dey carry last at all”. But then, there has been something that many Nigerians and Africa as a whole has been trying to achieve for long, but with limitations, and that’s building a website that has Facebook features. 8 Things Microsoft Got Right in Windows Phone 8.1

Windows 8.1 isn’t the only one getting some love from Microsoft on the first day of the Build 2014 developer conference. The ‘mobile first, cloud first’ company has also taken the opportunity to unveil the next edition of its Windows Phone 8 mobile operating system: Windows Phone 8.1 (codenamed ‘Blue’).

Unlike Windows 8.1 Update, which is a smaller update compared to last October’s Windows 8.1 update, Windows Phone 8.1 is a major update to the Windows Phone OS. It comes 17 months after Windows Phone 8, though to be fair, we did get three feature-adding updates along the way (the last one happened just last October) before today’s milestone.

So what’s new in Windows Phone 8.1? There are literally hundreds of new features (remember Windows Phone 7.5?), but here’s our top eight.

(P.S.: In case youre wondering why Windows Phone 8.1 coming from Windows Phone 8.0 is able to add so many features than Windows Phone 8.0 coming from Windows Phone 7.x, the answer is simple: Most of Windows Phone 8s changes were under the hood, at the kernel level. With this foundation in place, Windows Phone 8.1 is now able to build on it and realize so many new consumer-facing features and UI-level changes.)

 

1. Cortana

Widely known by its ‘Cortana’ codename before this, the final name of Windows Phone 8.1’s digital personal assistant is…still Cortana, which is brilliant. (Background: Cortana is the name of the AI character in the Halo video game series, which is owned by Microsoft. And Cortana in Windows Phone 8.1 is also voiced by the same actress, Jen Taylor.) Powered by the vast knowledge vault that is Bing (and other data sources, of course), and the speech recognition capabilities of TellMe, it’s an intelligent personal assistant in the same vein of Apple’s Siri and Google’s Google Now. It’s activated by either a Live Tile on the Start screen or by a press on the Search button.

Through interaction and your permission to have your data (which happens the very first moment you use it), Cortana’s usefulness will become more and more obvious with each passing day. As Microsoft puts it: “She detects and monitors the stuff you care about, looks out for you throughout the day, and helps filter out the noise so you can focus on what matters to you.” And what Cortana knows about you is stored in a virtual ‘Notebook’ that’s stored in the cloud, one you can easily revoke access to. You can input text or just speak to communicate with Cortana. In short, Cortana is a digital personal assistant that tries to act like a real human being. Its extensibility (there are APIs, so third-party app integration is possible) also sets it apart from Siri.

But there’s a slight crease to Cortana’s skirt: When it’s launched (as a beta) in Windows Phone 8.1 this year, only a few regions will get it. They are: the U.S., the U.K., and China. For us in Asia Pacific, we’ll have to wait till 2015.

She may not look like the Cortana character in Halo, but Cortana in Windows Phone 8.1 is very capable nonetheless.

Cortana needs as much information about you to be effective. Paranoid users need not apply.

Quiet Hours (i.e., a do not disturb function) comes to Windows Phone 8.1, and Cortana can also handle that for you.

 

2. Action Center

Another big feature is Action Center, which is a swipe-down-from-the-top panel that houses notifications for apps and settings (yes, something like Android’s notification shade and iOS’ Notification Center). Notifications can be silently added updated, and deleted in Action Center, and they’re viewable even when the phone is locked. Above the collection of toast and app notifications is a bar with four user-configurable ‘quick actions’ (i.e., shortcuts) for easy turning on and off of system settings like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Camera, Flight Mode, Internet Sharing, Location, Rotation Lock, and more.

As they say, it’s better late than never.

You can decide if an apps notifications show up in Action Center, select a notification sound, and more.

 

3. Swipe-typing with Word Flow Keyboard

We don’t know about you, but the new built-in swipe-based keyboard in Windows Phone 8.1 is a major productivity feature in our opinion. Similar to the Google Keyboard, or the Swype/SwiftKey third-party virtual keyboards on Android, this stock keyboard lets you enter a word by sliding your finger from one letter to the next, complete with a prediction system that suggests alternative words (emoticons too!) to speed up typing. Microsoft even claims that a ‘kid’ was able to break the world record for fastest typing previously held by the Swype keyboard on the Galaxy S4 using the Word Flow Keyboard (Update: Video below!).

For once, Windows Phone has one-upped both Android and iOS.

4. Background Image on Start Screen

The Modern design language places a lot of emphasis on readability, achieved through large text and minimizing UI chrome and graphics. While you can ‘dress up’ the Start screen on Windows Phone 8 with Live Tiles and select from a pre-determined set of accent hues, the lack of wallpaper customization does make it look boring after a while.

With Windows Phone 8.1, you can now use a photo for the Start screen background. But since there’s significantly less space in between tiles and around them on the phone (unlike the desktop), it doesn’t make sense to put an image underneath all the tiles (else, the tiles would simply obscure the image). The implementation on Windows Phone 8.1 is actually very clever: by toggling the transparency of the tiles, the image appears in them, with the end result resembling somewhat like a mosaic. And as you scroll, there’s a pretty cool parallax effect, where it looks like the background image is also moving.

Also, Windows Phone 8.1 now enables three columns of tiles for all screen sizes. Previously, only screens 5 inches or larger can do that.

In addition to choosing a background color and an accent color, you can now choose a photo for the Start background.

Enabling Show more Tiles will give you three columns. Put another way, you can put three medium tiles in a row.

All the new Start screen customization options can either lead to a gorgeous Start screen, or a hideous and confusing one.

 

5. Built-in VPN Support

At long last, VPN support is coming to Windows Phone. While this is often viewed as an enterprise feature, we bet that this will also make a lot of consumers (who subscribe to a VPN service to get region-specific content, like Netflix) very happy. Many protocols are supported, and it’s possible to define when a VPN connection is automatically triggered, if it’s not already connected.

Of course, VPN support isn’t the only new enterprise feature in an update as huge as Windows Phone 8.1. There’s also S/MIME (Secure/Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) support for encryption and signing of emails, enhanced MDM (Mobile Device Management) policies, support for the EAP-TLS (EAP-Transport Layer Security) standard, and password-protected document support for Office, among others. A common user request, VPN support finally comes to Windows Phone.

VPN functionality in Windows Phone 8.1 is supported by many major VPN vendors, such as Checkpoint, Del/SonicWALL, F5, and Juniper.

 

6. Redesigned Windows Phone Store

Windows Phone 8.1 also brings an overhauled Windows Phone Store, which unsurprisingly draws design inspiration from the Store on Windows 8.1. In a nutshell, most of the layout changes are made to improve app discoverability (e.g. quick links to featured, top, and trending apps sections) and to help users make better informed decisions (e.g. the ability to sort reviews, app suggestions based on location). We also like the higher info density, because we (and we believe many others, too) like to skim through catalogs, so showing more things at once is preferred.

The option to allow apps to update automatically is also present on Windows Phone 8.1 (don’t worry, you can set it to happen only when there’s a Wi-Fi connection). For phones with an SD card, it’s now possible to store app and game data on it. And speaking of SD card, besides apps, you can now store music, photos, and movies on it. Hooray!

7. Internet Explorer 11

When Windows 8.1 was released last year, Internet Explorer 11 was a major new feature. The mobile version has now made its way to Windows Phone 8.1, and as you may have expected from the version number, it sports many features we first saw on its desktop counterpart, such as support for password saving, Reading View mode (that strips out ads and reformats the text for easier reading), and WebGL (including a new HTML5 video UI for inline video playback). There’s also inPrivate Browsing (whereby the phone doesn’t keep data, such as cookies, temporary Internet files, history, of your browsing session), removal of the silly 6-tab limit, as well as syncing of tabs across devices (finally!).

The 6-tab limit is removed in Internet Explorer 11.
